Tips To Childproof The House
When you have a new born baby, there’s really little need to childproof the house. It would take maybe four or five months before the baby starts to lie flat on his chest and begins to crawl and a year or more before he starts walking. Now in my case, a 19-month old baby boy can really be a handful being so active and energetic. You’ll have to keep an eye on him every time and make sure he doesn’t bumb into something while running around the house.
Here is a short list of suggestions that we could take note of when trying to childproof our house:
Get down on your hands and knees
See the house the way a baby see it. Get down on your knees and crawl all around the house. This way you could see from the baby’s view and probably spot potential danger for your baby
Move Dangerous Things Out of Reach
Babies and toddlers are almost insatiably curious. Keep all dangerous things away from babies’ reach.
These things includes (of course not limited to) medicines, sharp objects, cleaners and other chemicals. I am living proof that babies want to touch and taste anything they see. That’s what my baby does. Always keep an eye on them.
Don’t Trust Childproof Containers
It still mystifies me, but toddlers has a ‘magical’ way of opening locked or closed containers.
So, don’t trust containers claiming its sealed and childproof. You leave your infant to play with those things, next thing you know your baby’s eating whatever is inside it.
Check All Rooms Not Just The Kitchen or Living Room
In checking rooms, look for potential dangers that your baby can bump into.
Bathroom cabinets contains medicines and other dangers for your child. Buy some lock (if there’s none already installed) and don’t forget to lock it after every use. Same goes with laundry room and bedroom cabinets.
Block All Unused Power Outlet
Toddlers are so curious. If they see an open power outlet, they will surely pick it with the next object they find. If you did tip number 2 above and hidden all metallic and sharp object, there’s a small chance that he’ll get electrocuted.
Of course the best choice is to buy those things that plugs directly on the outlets to prevent toddlers from getting their finger shock.
Put Dampener or Softened Edges of Tables, Chairs and Other Sharp Edged Furniture
If you did the first tip, you’ll know that there is a big possibility (almost 100%) that your baby, when crawling or learning to walk, will bump on these places.
There you have it. The list is in no way complete. These are just the things that I noticed having to watch my 19-month old baby and the (frightening) stories my wife tells me when I’m away in the office.
If you have any suggestions or ideas that i missed and could be included here, please post a comment.
Of course if you don’t have the items and tools mentioned here, you can always head over to your favorite hardware or best buy store nearest you!
Have a great day!
