How To Take Care of Kid’s Cuts and Wounds Properly

father and sonI read this small piece of article I found on Philippines’ free tabloid, Libre (right after reading my horoscop for that day). The original article was entitled “Care for kids’ cuts, wounds properly”, dated April 21, 2008… I’m promoting the article without pay or any promotional items :D

During summer, children engage in lots of physical activities that may lead to cuts and wounds. Here are some tips parents should know in order to take care of them..

  1. Clean the wound with cool water. Holding it under running water is best.
  2. Clean the skin around the wound with soap and osft washcloth
  3. Use tweezers cleaned with isopropyl alcohol to remove any dirt that remains in the wound after washing.
  4. Beleeding helps clean out wounds. Most small cuts will stop bleeding in a short time. To stop excessive bleeding appply firm but gentle pressure on the cut with a clean cloth or a piece of gauze. If the would is on the arm or leg, raising it above the heart will also help lessen the bleeding.
  5. If the wound is on an area that will get dirty or be rubbed by clothing, cover it with an adhesive strip; otherwise, leave it open to keep it dry. However, certain wounds must be kept moist and clean to help reduce scarring. Special bandages are available for this kind of wound.
  6. Apply topical antibiotic to keep the wound clean and avoid infections. Cleaning and disinfectig are not enough.

Don’t let cuts, scrapes and scratches stop you from making the most out of this season. Enjoy the summer and keep that father and son bond strong!
