Couvades Syndrome :: Pregnant Fathers?

I have very bad news for you first time father-to-be. Did you know that 20% of all fathers experienced he symptoms of pregnancy and labor? This is called the Couvades Syndrome.

Weird but true. But don’t worry; they are not really pregnant of course. It may not be true but the symptoms are very real.

What are these symptoms?

To name a few, these are morning sickness, sore back, swelling limbs, contractions and more.

As to why these phenomenon is happening, no one knows. There are sayings and theories that these are sympathetic in nature (hence the term “sympathetic pregnancy”) or could have been brought in by stress. What ever the reason may be, it is completely psychological.

One thing to note though, this is not new stuff. Medical writings dates back to 400 ago proves that this has been experienced by fathers. In some country Couvades Syndrome is widely accepted and most of the time, is already part of their social culture.

I wonder if these father also experience an increase in weight…
