“Sudden Infant Death Syndrome” – SIDS – Parents Beware
I saw this distrubing post on Sel’s blog (no, Sel’s blog post was not bad, it’s informative actuall) but the information about SIDS (“Sudden Infant Death Syndrome”) is scary and I’m sure will sadden every parent out there.
What is SIDS?
Like I mentioned above SIDS stans for ‘Sudden Infant Death Syndrome’. Just hearing those words send a chill. To make more heads and tails on it, here’ s Wikipedia’s definition of SIDS:
Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is a syndrome marked by the symptoms of sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy infant aged one month to one year.
Typically the infant is found dead after having been put to bed, and exhibits no signs of having suffered
It’s sad don’t you think? Newly born angels gone that instant without any clues?
SIDS is also called the “Crib Death” or “Cot Death” in the United States and United Kingdom. According to statistics it affects 1 of every 2,000 births! That’s still alarming. Here’s more alarming data about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome,
SIDS deaths in the U.S. decreased from 4,895 in 1992 to 2,247 in 2004. But, during a similar time period, 1989 to 2004, SIDS being listed as the cause of death for sudden infant death (SID) decreased from 80% to 55% According to Dr. John Kattwinkel, chairman of the Center for Disease Control (CDC) Special Task Force on SIDS “A lot of us are concerned that the rate (of SIDS) isn’t decreasing significantly, but that a lot of it is just code shifting”
I could not imagine the pain and hurt that the parents of these angels felt when they found out that their newly born babies are no more.
This is one of those times where I know that God loves me because he blessed me with 2 wonderful boys (and a lovely wife who loves to cook but has no recipes collection)
